Maroon 5’s new video for “Animals” simultaneously exemplifies everything that’s fucked up about how our society views both women and animals. Kudos to them for having the balls to create this bloody little gem.
I warn you, it’s offensive and painful to watch – but I think that’s the valuable point. You could take it too seriously and go on a mind-bending rant. Alternatively, you could use it as a source for constructive discussion. While conversations about sexism seem ubiquitous there are still many unfamiliar with the concept of speciesism. I hope this effort by Maroon 5 works a little magic in helping people connect the dots.
Or don’t watch it. Seriously, if you’re going to get all bent out of shape go do something productive instead. Go listen to Barry White and practice your twerking.
